■ Personality:

Approachable|Helpful|Strong Minded|Stand-offish|Protective|Loyal|Trustworthy|Unforgiving

Approachable: "Well, you took the time to seek me out, might as well hear what ya gotta say."

While not exactly friendly, if you went to the trouble to find her, she won't turn you away. Even if someone sought her out to just to criticize her, she'd listen patiently before responding.

If the reason was the latter, the response will probably be "Fuck off."

Helpful: "Need a hand there?"

Having grown up in a household that put helping others near the top of their priorities list, Astrid is always ready to lend a hand. Be it advice or just an extra hand on a project or hunt, she'll help how she can.

Just as long as the help does not involve anything illegal. Or silver. Or anything that would harm her.

Strong minded: "This is how I've always done it, and this is how it's always worked. Good luck trying to change my mind."

Sometimes she seems more like a bull than a wolf. Once she makes a decision, or someone contests a method she's used effectively her whole life, good luck getting her to budge. She will get things done her way or the highway, unless she can be made to see reason.

Which most often involves them besting her in hand to hand combat. Blame the wolf hierarchy for that one.

Stand-offish: "Look, I appreciate the gesture but I really have to decline."

When your species has been hunted down by nutsos for as long as your family history states, the last thing you want to do is be completely trusting. Taking everything said with a grain of salt, Astrid is wary of all she encounters and offers extended to her. It's not uncommon for her to decline an invitation because it doesn't feel right to her. "Right" being it feeling like not a trap or ambush. The last thing she wants is to end up as a skinned pelt on some hunter's wall, and it shows in her unwillingness to go somewhere unfamiliar with someone she doesn't know well.

Protective: "Don't you dare touch them again. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"

Those she does trust, however, she protects. Much like a wolf in a pack, if someone in her circle is wronged in any way by someone either in or out of the same circle can expect distrust and hostility until proven that it was just a misunderstanding. Hell, she'll go far enough to verbally threaten bodily harm to the offender for coming anywhere near the offended. Not even the person wronged can deter her from protecting them, say your fine and she'll still protect you, but with a little more room.

Loyal: "Until the end."

Those she trusts and protects, have her undying loyalty. If they're ever in trouble, she'll do what she can to get them out of it. Wrongfully accused? She'll defend them unless she believes they deserve the punishment. Need somewhere to stay for a while to let some big hubbub blow over? Her house is open to you.

As long as you don't break her trust, that loyalty and protection will stay even after you die.

Trustworthy: "If I have one redeeming quality, it's that you can trust me not to speak your secrets."

Likes you or not, if she ends up learning of some big secret of yours, it won't be used to blackmail you. Unless the secret can be used to clear the name of another friend and she particularly dislikes you, that fact stands. Big or small, whatever information is asked to be kept private, will be.

Unforgiving: "I don't just give out second chances buddy. And you have a long road ahead before I think you've earned yours."

That loyalty and protection comes at a cost. Don't cross her. Don't give her reason to distrust you, and don't EVER back out of a promise or ditch her in a time of need. If any of those things occur, you're done, out, considered rogue. She can't afford to give second chances out like candy, so consider yourself lucky if you get one. She takes offenses personally, and god help the person who's on the bad list that catches her on a bad day.

■ Background:

You'd be surprised to learn how far Astrid came to get to this town, from her home in the far north. Or that she wasn't always able to transform into a giant wolf like beast able to tear men limb from limb. While her family did pass the lycanthropy down the bloodline generation by generation, it's far from genetic. It is a choice, her father chose the gift, while her mother, who married into the family, chose against it. The family had first gained the gift many many years ago. Since that first generation children and spouses who wished to become a werewolf themselves underwent a ritual introduced by the first werewolf. This ritual, while having the same end result as a bite, made sure the new wolf wouldn't be overwhelmed by their first change and go feral, which would mean the rest of the family would have to put them down. When the time came, Astrid chose to go through with the ritual, when she was around thirteen years of age.

Of course, that doesn't explain who she is now, does it?

She was born in the cold regions of  Norway. Her two parents had already conceived their firstborn, Astrid's older sister, a few years before, but had nothing but love for their second daughter. Growing up far away from what would be considered "normal" civilization Astrid's playmates as a child were her older sister, her best friend Silvia, and her extended family, who all seemed to live nearby and yet far away at the same time. Her father taught her how to fight and hunt, and her mother how to track, strategize, and make clothing or armor out of the hides from kills and the fibers of plants. They went to the city on occasion, for things like medicine that couldn't be collected in the thick forests around their home. Astrid never liked the city much, despite being smaller than some other places, it was too cramped, loud, and just busy for her liking. And the clothes she had to wear to "blend in" she wasn't very fond of.

Life continued on in that manner until she was ten. She'd never really questioned that her father and a good portion of their family lived their life based on the lunar cycle instead of a normal calendar. Having no real friends outside her family (her education was homeschooling) she wasn't aware of what was considered "normal" by society's standards. On her tenth birthday, her parents took her aside and revealed the truth. They were werewolves, at least, her father was, along with most of the family, and they had been for generations. They explained it all, the history, the transformation, and the choice. When a child in their family turned 13, they were presented with two paths. One, the way of the wolf, the other, the way of the hunter, the human. They explained to her that she could stay human, and her life would continue as normal, and when she came of age, she was free to do as she pleased. If she chose the wolf, her life would change drastically. She would be granted a new body, new power she couldn't fathom as a human, but a cost. She would become a creature of myth, a target of hunters of the supernatural, and weak to objects that now had no power over her. She would be the apex predator, her inner instincts awoken, but her life wouldn't be the same. She'd have to watch the sky, live outside of town, and keep her power a secret from those who would hunt her because of it. She had three years to think it over, choose to become a creature of legend, and carry on the Frostmane name, or, choose to remain human, as her sister had done.

By the time she was thirteen, she knew her true calling.

On the first full moon after her thirteenth birthday, the ritual was held in a clearing used many times before about an hour away from their house. Her grandmother, considered the matriarch of the family, and the one with the highest control of her wolf, was master of ceremony. Astrid felt herself becoming anxious, but her resolve never faltered, she knew this is what she desired in her soul, there was no room for backing out.

The change was instant. As soon as the strange potion her grandmother procured slid down her throat, the young girl was struck by waves of pain. Her bones were breaking and reforming, shortening and lengthening, her skin stretching, her organs writhing as they shifted form. What felt like hours of pain for her were only minutes as her cries turned into howls, and the beast inside her woke.

She doesn't remember that night. Nobody remembered their first night in her family, the change was to strong. But according to tradition, the new wolf leads a hunt to solidify their new role within the pack, and that is what she did. Her father tells of a massive elk, chased down for hours until it stumbled from exhaustion, when she pounced and brought it down with a savage bite to the neck. She can't recall everything after that her dad said happened but she remembers he said that as the sun started to rise she shifted back and passed out. She slept for three days straight, which she does remember waking up from.

The next several months were spent getting used to the change. She was never truly alone now, even when walking by herself she could feel the wolf inside her watching everything with her eyes. It was like someone else was with her, yet at the same time she felt like herself. She embraced the shift entirely, with all it's ups and downs. It wasn't long until she'd mastered the wolf, and could control her change down to a science, except on nights with a full moon. That was something only a select few lycans had learned how to control. During the passing years, her younger brother was born. He ended up learning the secret younger than most, both Astrid and him were at the wrong place at the wrong time, but he took it in stride and loves the idea.

Around the time her brother found out about the family, she met the individuals who would later become some of the most important people in her life, Vilkar, and Aeris. They were from a different pack than she was, but she remembered seeing them on occasion when some of the nearby packs got together to exchange news. Several more interactions later and the three of them were inseparable in their affection for each other. Despite being slightly odd, the three wolves wishing to live as husband and wives, the three of them were wed.

Half a year ago, she heard about the town of Indieville, and to be fair, her interest was piqued. A place where the humans and other races lived without hiding from one another? Strange indeed. So she felt the need to check it out. Currently she resides in a cabin she built herself in the wildwoods, hunting wildlife and selling the spoils to make money. Not that she really needs the money, but she's learned it has it's uses.

If you hear a howling at night coming from the deep woods, then you know that the Frostmane Wolf is on the prowl.

Transformation - Being a werewolf, being able to transform is kinda a no brainer. While it's painful, her body has gotten so used to the pain that she hardly feels it anymore unless the transformation wasn't triggered willingly. Her transformed state is about eight feet tall, covered in dark grey fur and piercing ice blue eyes. The fur around her neck and on the back of her head that forms a sort of "mane" has light grey, almost white, tips, which is why her family's clan is called Frostmane. She is able to understand human speech in this form but is mostly unable to speak, aside from very gravely, rumbly, and short phrases like "yes", "no", "look", "quiet", and "fresh track" , often they're so garbled you couldn't even tell she was trying to say anything.

Infection - Don't get bit, idiot.

    Strengths
  • When transformed, she gains added physical strength due to the muscle growth. This is only accessible in her wolf form, her human form has strength within normal human limits.
  • Her hide is tougher in this form, and will be slightly resistant to non-silvered weapons
  • Sight, hearing, and smell are all enhanced in wolf form. Her sight even more so at night and around sunset. While in human form she can choose to push her wolf forward just enough to activate these abilities to a degree, but it's risky for her to keep herself like this.
  • She is able to eat raw meat, even in human form, without major consequences. Her tolerance is lower as a human than as a wolf, but it comes in handy if she's stranded somewhere without prepared food. (in wolf form there aren't really any consequences unless the meat is diseased/tainted)
She has a naturally tough immune system, it's hard for her to get sick/infected, but when she does, it really hurts.

  • With her wolf senses, she's become an adept tracker. Animals and humans are easier than supernaturals however, since supernaturals all have different smells depending on their species.
  • She excels at hunting. While her pelts may not be in the best condition because of how she hunts, she has managed to reduce hide damage to a point where she'll still make some money off of them.

Weaknesses

  • Anything containing silver. One way to make sure she doesn't move if she get's tied up is to have silver embedded into her binds. If she tries transforming, the silver will make sure the binds hold, and cause her immense pain.
    • Wounds caused by silver weapons can cancel out her disease/infection resistance. The infected flesh has to be scraped away from the surface of the wound before any natural healing kicks in and even after that she'll be left with a metallic looking scar wherever the wound occurred.
  • Wolfsbane is toxic to her in any form. While brushing against it yields a rather annoying rash and smelling the flowers might give a mild headache, ingesting it in any form or inhaling wolfsbane smoke will severely poison her. Worst case scenario is if it got rubbed up against an open wound, as getting it directly into her bloodstream can easily prove fatal.
  • Excessive rage can trigger her transformations unwillingly. The wolf decides that Astrid's wolf form is a good intimidation tactic and forces her transformation. When the transformation is triggered this way, her actions are based on instinct and not on human rational. Anything and everything she does like this can be a danger to anyone nearby, even allies.
    • The chance of transformation under these conditions raises significantly if she has already brought her wolf forward to enhance her senses.
    • She can be stopped before the transformation completes and snapped back into reality if her attention is diverted by an ally/friend.
  • The longer she stays transformed, the longer her recovery period post transformation will be. The consequences don't start showing until she reverts back to human form after either strenuous activity in her wolf body, or staying transformed for longer than 10 hours. Recovery can be either a few hours rest or days of being to tired to do much else other than sleep.
    • These effects can be lessened if she sleeps while in wolf form. While not completely removed, sleeping for a few hours transformed can shave a few hours off recovery time while in her human body.
